Actor Heath Ledger dies at 28

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Actor Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday of a possible drug overdose in a Lower Manhattan apartment, the New York Police Department said.

The Academy Award-nominated actor was 28.

Ledger was found naked and unresponsive, facedown on the floor at the foot of his bed by a housekeeper trying to wake him for an appointment with a masseuse, said police spokesman Paul Browne.

"Pills were found in the vicinity of the bed," he told CNN.

"This is being looked at as a possible overdose, but that is not confirmed yet."

Browne later told reporters some prescription medications were found in the room, including sleeping pills.

But he stressed police have made no determination of the cause of Ledger's death -- that would be done by the medical examiner.

He said the pills were not "scattered about."

No note was found and there was no indication of foul play, Browne said. Ledger was found at about 3 p.m., and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel about 3:30 p.m.

A crowd of onlookers, photographers and reporters gathered outside the apartment building after news of Ledger's death was reported. Police officers were guarding the doors.

Browne said he did not know how long Ledger had been renting the apartment, which he said took up the entire fourth floor.

An autopsy would be conducted on Wednesday, said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner's office.

Ledger's family called his death "very tragic, untimely and accidental."

"Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life, but few had the pleasure of truly knowing him," his father said.

"He was a down-to-earth, generous, kindhearted, life-loving, unselfish individual extremely inspirational to many."

Despite earlier denying reports that she was pregnant, Nicole Kidman finally confirmed on Monday that she is sperminated.

The actress' publicist, Wendy Day, just released the following statement:

London, England (AHN) - The International Tennis Federation on Friday said that world number one tennis star Martina Hingis has been banned from playing for two years because she tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon last year.

ITF announced that an independent anti-doping tribunal found that Hingis had committed an offense. Hingis has denied using cocaine, but the tribunal rejected arguments that the sample tested was not hers, the Associated Press reports.

Hingis, 27, had announced her retirement on Nov. 1, the same day that she revealed she had tested positive for cocaine on a test.

But unlike some sports, another tennis star says that drugs aren't widespread in tennis anyway because they don't enhance performance.

After learning that Hingis had been banned for two years, American tennis star Venus Williams told Agency France Press that she would give Hingis the benefit of the doubt over whether the cocaine use charges were true.

Williams told reporters "there are very few" cases of cocaine use in tennis because it does nothing to help a tennis player.

She explained that taking the drug doesn't calm a player's nerves or enhance their play as it might in track and field or other sports. She explained that tennis was "definitely" more mental ability and skill, so cocaine didn't enhance a tennis player's game.

"There is no magic pill for that," Williams was quoted as saying by AFP.

Hingis, a former five-time Grand Slam champion had only returned to tennis in 2005 after being out for four years because of injuries. She has three weeks to contest the tribunal's decision.

The Hollywood actress, whose star has been on the wane since a series of embarrassing drunken incidents and spell in rehab, had just finished clocking up three passionate encounters during her trip.

The Mean Girls actress, 21, first met waiter Alessandro Di Nunzio shortly after arriving on the Italian island of Capri for a film festival.

The pair exchanged phone numbers at a film showing which the actress attended with Heroes star and friend Hayden Panettiere, 18.

But she dumped her friend shortly afterwards to meet up with, and lock lips with, Di Nunzio.
